Whistler Property Values
by Agnes Hedller, Sussex
Group - Northface Realty, Whistler
Whistler at a Glance
Whistler real estate offers a lot more value than
other major North American ski resorts. The following
is a guide to property values that will give you a
close look at Whistler real estate. Although this
material is deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
First, Whistler geography. Whistler is in a valley
that stretches about 5 miles from south to north.
Most tourist activity is in Whistler Village, which
has much of the accommodation and services, and from
where the major ski lifts begin.
The
map shows Whistler Valley and the principal real estate
features (Village, subdivisions, etc.). Click on the
map to get a full-size image. I suggest that you keep
the map open for reference while you read the following
material on property values.
The Village is an area of condominium hotels and
townhouses, retail shops and restaurants, and a multitude
of tourist facilities and attractions. Just east of
the Village is the Upper Village, a series of hotels
and shops at the base of the Blackcomb ski runs. Above
the Upper Village is the Blackcomb Benchlands area,
which contains many condominium suite and townhouse
developments, a golf course and lake, and a few high-end
chalets (freestanding houses). All of these areas
are within walking distance of the lifts and each
other, and some developments have true ski-in and
ski-out locations.
Whistler
Mountain also has a second lift base about 2 miles
south of Whistler Village, called Whistler Creek,
which provided the original access to the mountain.
Whistler Creek has a high-speed gondola from this
base onto the mountain and there are plans for more
lifts in future. Whistler Creek, with its mountain
base, is now becoming a new village. There are a variety
of condominium suites, townhouses and chalets in Whistler
Creek, some of which are on the ski runs. In particular,
there are a beautiful low-density townhouse development
high up on Whistler Mountain called "Taluswood"
and a new area of large, exclusive ski-in/ski-out
lots in a development called "Kadenwood."
Whistler
is also home to famous, scenic golf courses with Blueberry,
Whistler Cay Heights and Green Lake developments overlooking
or built into these magnificent golf courses. Blueberry
and Green Lake consist mostly of houses and larger
townhouses.
These general areas attract the interest of most
international buyers.
Outside of these village areas, there is a variety
of real estate developments: condominium suites and
townhouses, chalets, building lots and pensions (lodges).
These range from modest and inexpensive suites to
exclusive chalets in exceptional locations.
